Channel Islands National Park
Sea caves glow aquamarine as kayak paddles slice the crystal water of Channel Islands National Park.
🌲 Park Overview
Dubbed “North America’s Galápagos,” Channel Islands National Park protects five rugged islands—Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara—just 20 miles off California’s Ventura coast. Isolated for millennia, these Mediterranean-climate outcrops harbor more than 2,000 plant and animal species, 145 found nowhere else on Earth. With no cars, few services, and dark skies unspoiled by mainland glow, the park invites boaters, hikers, campers, kayakers, and snorkelers to unplug in an ocean wilderness.
🌟 Fun Facts
Over 25% of the park’s species are endemic, including the tiny island fox and brilliant Channel Islands scrub jay.
Santa Rosa Island hosts the oldest known human remains in North America—the ~13,000-year-old Arlington Springs Man.
Anacapa Lighthouse (1932) is the last built on the West Coast and still guides ships through busy Santa Barbara Channel.
Sea caves dot Santa Cruz Island, including Painted Cave, one of the world’s largest at 1,215 ft long.
