🌲 Park Overview

High atop the Four Corners plateau in southwest Colorado, Mesa Verde National Park safeguards more than 5,000 archaeological sites—including 600 remarkably preserved cliff dwellings—built by the Ancestral Pueblo people between 550 and 1300 CE. From panoramic mesa drives to ranger-led tours that descend ladders into centuries-old dwellings, the park offers an immersive window into the ingenuity and daily life of a culture that thrived in the high desert long before European contact.

🌟 Fun Facts

Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America with 150 rooms and 23 kivas.

The park’s name means “green table” in Spanish, referencing the juniper-and-pinyon-covered mesas.

Mesa Verde became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 for its cultural significance.

More than 75 miles of hard-rock tunnels carry water to the mesa top via the early-1900s Far View Reservoir system.
