🌲 Park Overview

Straddling the U.S.–Canada border in northern Minnesota, Voyageurs National Park is a water-world of 218,000 acres, over 40 % of it sparkling lakes threaded by boreal forest and Precambrian granite. Named for 18th-century French-Canadian fur traders, Voyageurs is best explored by boat, canoe, kayak, or winter snowmobile—offering island-dotted solitude, aurora-filled skies, and some of the darkest waters in the Lower 48. Four large frontier lakes—Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan, and Sand Point—connect 500 miles of undeveloped shoreline, secluded campsites, and historic gold-rush sites.

🌟 Fun Facts

Voyageurs contains more than 500 islands and 655 miles of shoreline— yet only one paved mile of road inside the park.

The Aurora Borealis is visible 70–100 nights per year; the park earned International Dark Sky Park status in 2020.

Summer water temps stay a brisk 60–70 °F, so the lakes rarely freeze out algae—maintaining pristine clarity.

In winter, park staff groom the Rainy Lake Ice Road—a plowed highway across the frozen lake for skiers, snowshoers & vehicles.
