🌲 Park Overview

Situated in South Dakota’s Black Hills, Wind Cave National Park protects one of the world’s densest cave systems and the first cave designated a national park (1903). Aboveground, rolling mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forests support a thriving bison herd, elk, and prairie dog towns. Belowground, more than 160 miles of labyrinthine passages reveal rare boxwork and frostwork formations found almost nowhere else on Earth. Whether you’re trekking sun-dappled prairie trails, descending a ranger-lit cave tour, or stargazing over buffalo-grazed grasslands, Wind Cave offers a unique blend of surface serenity and subterranean wonder.

🌟 Fun Facts

Wind Cave’s namesake gusts are caused by air pressure equalizing through the cave’s small natural entrance—air flow direction changes with barometric pressure.

Over 95% of the planet’s known boxwork speleothems are in Wind Cave.

Indigenous Lakota people consider the cave’s entrance a sacred emergence site; please treat it respectfully.

The cave ranks sixth-longest in the world (as of 2025) with only a tiny fraction mapped.
